Introducing Beau Hawethorne!

The eccentric heir to the centuries-old Hawethorne family fortune. Once respected merchants dealing in magical artifacts, the Hawethornes were disgraced during a period of economic hardship, when it was discovered that they had turned to sourcing artifacts from the burial sites of emperors past. The family fractured; most changed their names or moved away. The family fortune dwindled; the few who remained subsided on graverobbing.

Beau was raised in the echoing halls of Hawethorne Manor, a great beast of sullen grey stone perched in the mountains, looming over the [currently unnamed] city below. His father was rarely home, spending weeks away on graverobbing expeditions, or so he said. Since Beau's mother died, when he was in his mid-teens, his father's visits are fewer, and shorter. They have dinner together about twice a year now, and his father always says 'I love you.'

Years of solitude and dysfunctional relationships have made him rather difficult to get along with. His distrust of others manifests as scorn. Even when he's not trying to be hostile, he's generally irritable, and can often come off rude if he doesn't think to modulate his tone. He has little patience for anything he considers to be others' nonsense. Still, he can be gentle or even vulnerable if he feels truly safe with someone.

Appearance

  • He is often grimy and greasy-haired.

Trivia

  • Hawthorns are my favorite plant! For a couple years I've been trying to grow a seedling I dug up near a bigger tree, but it's still pretty fragile and only has baby thorns...
  • Beau was very much a self-insert in his early years of existence. If I said he wasn't still a little bit (or a lot) of a self-insert I'd be lying. After all these years I'm just too emotionally attached to him to care!!
  • When I was a kid I made up a convoluted, dimension-hopping backstory for his mother just so I could explain why he said shit like "Jesus Christ" or "Oh my God." Suffice to say that's not canon anymore...I still let characters from this universe say "God" as a treat though. I don't think it's necessarily a monotheistic culture, I just think using "gods" or whatever just doesn't hit the same. It's all about the vibes man...
  • Beau was named after a character from Gemini Summer by Iain Lawrence. He dies horribly, and it's decribed in a pretty brutal way that I, missing the point entirely, thought was very cool. If there's one thing I remember about Lawrence's books, there was always some intense death scene or decaying body or rats eating a guy's foot. There was a span of like 2 years where I got really into drawing boats because of The Wreckers trilogy. Thank you Mr. Lawrence for making me who I am today (insufferable).
